The PhD program requires at least 48 hours beyond the bachelor’s degree (please see the Department of English website for specific course distribution requirements), a general exam (with a preliminary written component), a dissertation, and a final examination on the dissertation. Each program is distinguished by its flexibility, allowing the student significant input in determining a departmental-level academic course plan.
