What is Marketing?
Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes that performs customer needs analysis, executes product/services design, devises branding strategy, establishes pricing, accomplishes promotion, and creates a distribution system while maintaining a competitive advantage. The Department of Marketing educates and prepares students for each of these functions by stressing “hands-on” learning in their courses, which utilize real-world or simulated real-world projects.

BS in Marketing
The Bachelor of Science in Marketing is a 120-hour degree program with several learning objectives for students:
- Demonstrate an understanding of market segmentation and targeting
- Demonstrate an understanding of consumer behavior
- Demonstrate an understanding of marketing research and ethical considerations in marketing
- Demonstrate an understanding of relationship management
- Demonstrate an understanding of strategic planning
- Demonstrate an understanding of global marketing
Concentrations in Marketing:
The Digital Marketing concentration will equip students with the practical knowledge and skillsets necessary to succeed in the growing and in-demand professions of digital and social media marketing. The concentration includes exposure to digital marketing content distribution platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. Additionally, students will gain experience with digital marketing campaign organizational tools and software, such as Hubspot, Google Analytics, and other data-centric platforms for the rollout of a digital or social media campaign. Students will be able to integrate their knowledge of promotions, marketing research, consumer behavior, and statistics that can inform marketing strategies, tasks, and decisions.
The Marketing Analytics concentration is designed to equip students with the practical knowledge and skillsets necessary to make data-driven decisions. The concentration includes exposure to programming languages, such as R, Python, and Tableau, as well as methods and techniques that enable the construction of predictive models and metrics, such as customer lifetime value, sales forecasting, and customer segmentation. Students will be able to integrate their knowledge of economics, decision science, marketing research, consumer behavior, and statistics that can inform marketing strategies, tasks, and decisions.
The Professional Sales concentration is a set of marketing courses and guided experiences designed to equip students with the practical knowledge and skill sets necessary to excel in the dynamic domain of professional selling. Specifically, students in the professional sales concentration take courses in professional sales fundamentals and sales management. Students then engage in either a professional sales practicum or a professional sales internship, which are designed for students to gain experience while working in sales positions guided by a sales professional practitioner and overseen by a faculty mentor. Companies recruiting LSU marketing majors often place special value on students who have a professional sales background, as it reduces their training time and costs.
