Digital Media Art & Engineering (Graduate Program)


Program Overview

Conceptualize, collaborate, create, develop and surpass your wildest imagination. Learn how to create video games, animation, virtual production and visual effects in a  $30 million, state-of-the-art facility. Work with a diverse group of digital artists, technicians and researchers to solve complex team-based problems using professional tools and pipelines. The goal of the DMAE program is to be one of the top graduate-level interactive, XR, media and entertainment technology programs in the world.

In this program you will work with complex software tools used in industry, high-end digital workstations, a curved led volume, one of the fastest super computers and the latest in specialized hardware. Coursework will include project classes where you will work in multidisciplinary teams on large productions.

Admission 

Applications and supporting materials for all graduate study must be submitted through the online application site for the LSU Graduate School. Official transcripts, official test scores, and other materials that come from third-party sources must be mailed to: Graduate Admissions, 114 West David Boyd Hall, Baton Rouge, LA 70803. These paper documents are stored electronically and departments have access to all materials submitted by and/or on behalf of a student applying to graduate study.

Admission to the Digital Media Arts & Engineering Program:

Applicants are required to take the GRE exam to be accepted into the program. Admission is selective and your application is evaluated on the basis of your portfolio. Digital Media has been in the domain of engineering and the digital arts but has expanded into many other disciplines. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the program and the wide adoption in all fields, we accept students with a bachelor degree from any program of study.

Financial Assistance

Support may be available through the student’s home department or other units in the form of research or teaching assistantships. To ensure consideration for financial aid, all application materials should be submitted in accordance with deadlines established by the LSU Graduate School.

Facilities

The DMAE program is housed in the Louisiana Digital Media Center. It is a 50,000 square foot facility that is co-located with Electronic Arts North American Testing Center. The facility includes a lab, offices for faculty, and workspaces for students. The facility includes:

  • State-of-the art theater with multi-channel audio and 4K (UltraHD) projection
  • XR Studio with a 10’ tall by 20’ wide LED volume for real-time virtual production
  • XR Studio with a full OptiTrack Motion Capture system
  • 3,084 sq. ft. of classroom space

  • State-of-the art computers
  • AR (Hololens II) & VR Headsets (Oculus & Vive)
  • DJI Matrice 300 RTK Drone with L1 and P1 camera and lidar attachment

  • Faro Focus Premium lidar scanner
  • Faro Freestyle II handheld scanner
  • Software includes Autodesk Maya, Unity, Unreal Engine, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, ZBrush, Houdini and Adobe Creative Cloud to name a few.  

Students have access to facilities in engineering and art allowing access to a wide range of equipment and software. The program keeps up to date with rapidly changing hardware and software needs in the media arts field.
