Program Overview
The primary mission of the Rucks Department of Management’s graduate program is to develop trained professionals who are qualified to instruct in a university environment and capable of conducting scholarly research. All PhD students are required to demonstrate knowledge in the broad domain of management and in an area of concentration within management. The area of concentration may be selected from either organizational behavior/human resource management (OB/HR) or strategic management.
Administration
Admission
Individuals desiring admission to the department of management PhD program must submit a formal application to the LSU Graduate School, which needs to be submitted through the online application system of the LSU Graduate School. For detailed information how to submit official transcripts, test scores, and other materials, please refer to the information provided by the Graduate School. All submitted application materials are stored electronically and the department has access to all materials submitted by and/or on behalf of a student applying to graduate study. The priority application deadline is January 15 and after this date received applications may be considered on a rolling basis.
A complete formal application submitted to the Graduate School should include: transcript(s) of undergraduate study, transcript(s) of all graduate work, GMAT (or GRE) score, and a statement of purpose. An applicant whose native language is not English and/or who has been educated outside of the U.S. in a country or province where English is not the only official language must demonstrate proof of English proficiency by submitting a TOEFL iBT, an IELTS, a PTE, a Duolingo, or a Michigan English Language score before the application is evaluated for admission. Please refer to the Graduate School’s Admission site for a list of permissible test scores. Regardless of test scores submitted, official scores are those reported directly to LSU by the respective testing service at the request of the student.
An applicant’s statement of purpose should include:
- Career objectives and reasons for wanting to pursue a PhD;
- How the applicant’s academic or professional background has prepared him or her for PhD studies;
- Reasons for selecting the PhD in Management at LSU;
- To the extent possible, an outline of possible research interests;
- Any other information that may assist in the admission decision.
Applicants should typically have successfully completed coursework equivalent to either the MBA or MS in Management. Qualified applicants who lack prior graduate level studies will be given consideration but if admitted those candidates may be required to complete additional coursework. In general, minimum admission requirements are a GPA of 3.5 in prior graduate work (or undergraduate work for applicants who have not completed graduate level coursework), and a score of 600 or above on the GMAT.
If general Graduate School criteria are met, application dossiers are reviewed by the Rucks Department of Management’s PhD Policy and Admissions Committee. Upon completion of this process, an admission recommendation will be forwarded to the Graduate School.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance is available to some students. Support may be available through the student’s home department or other units in the form of research or teaching assistantships. A student should contact his or her home department for more information on available assistantship positions. To ensure consideration for financial aid, all application materials should be submitted in accordance with the application deadline.
