(Interdisciplinary degree through Engineering Science)

The departmental-level academic course plan for each student will be developed in consultation with and approved by the student’s graduate advisory committee. The committee will include the student’s major advisor and at least two additional members of the graduate faculty such that the LSU Graduate School’s requirements for graduate committees are satisfied. The Graduate Advisory Committee totals at least five but not more than six members (including the major professor) of the graduate faculty approved by the dean of the College of Engineering. Three members of the student’s committee must be members of the Graduate Faculty from the College of Engineering – two of which must be full members of the graduate faculty. At least two members must come from departments within the university offering the PhD degree. A committee member must represent each minor field.

The PhD degree is a degree that requires a dissertation. Sixty hours of credit at the graduate level must be earned including a maximum of six hours of credit in dissertation research. The curricular requirements include:

  • At least 27 hours at the 7000 level or above, exclusive of any type of independent studies credit except for special project credit earned.
  • A minimum of at least 27 hours of earned credit in courses offered by departments in the College of Engineering or equivalent department for transfer credit.
  • One credit of BE 7500  is required.
  • One major and two minor areas of study must be declared.

The student must pass a general and a final exam consisting of a final dissertation defense, normally a comprehensive oral exam. At the discretion of the student’s advisory committee, a written exam may be required.
