The PhD program in civil engineering requires passing a qualifying examination. Students entering the program with a bachelor’s degree are required to earn 42 credit hours of approved course work plus 1 credit hour of the CE 7750 Seminar (1) course, exclusive of thesis and dissertation credit. Students entering the program with the master’s degree are required to earn 18 credit hours of approved course work plus 1 credit hour for the CE 7750 Seminar (1) course, exclusive of thesis and dissertation credit. In addition to the coursework requirements, students must pass a qualifying examination within one year of enrollment, the general examination, prepare a dissertation, and pass a final examination on the dissertation. Additional curricular requirements include:
- Some concentrations within Civil Engineering may have core course requirements that must be earned. These can be found on the department graduate program website.
- At least 50% of all of the course credit hours must be at the 7000-level.
- For the student entering without an MS degree, a minimum of 12 of the course credit hours must be in Civil Engineering courses.
