Industrial Engineering, M.S.I.E.

(MSIE)

The IE program in the of Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering offers a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering (MSIE) with concentration in (1) Information Technology, (2) Supply Chain Systems, (3) Human Factors and (4) Healthcare Systems. Participants can also earn an interdepartmental Master of Science in Engineering Science (MSES) degree with a focus in a concentration in Information Technology Engineering (ITE) administered by the College of Engineering. The master’s program in Industrial Engineering is offered with both thesis and non-thesis (project) options. For the thesis option, students must complete at least 24 hours of course work and six hours of thesis research. For the project option, students must complete at least 33 hours of course work and a three credit hour master’s project in independent study format. For some students additional courses may be required as prerequisites or to demonstrate English proficiency. Credit hours counting toward program requirements must be in courses allowed for graduate credit as described in the LSU General Catalog. Both thesis and non-thesis degree programs in Industrial Engineering are available with specific focus areas including: Ergonomics and Human Factors, Healthcare, Supply Chain Systems, and Information Technology Engineering. The requirements for both the thesis and non-thesis options are the same in each of the tracks and are as follows (details of each track can be found on the program website):

For the thesis option:

  • The thesis must involve some aspect of selected track/specialty area.
  • Requirement for each track consists of three courses (nine credit hours) from that track.
  • The remaining five courses (15 credit hours) must support the selected track/specialty area and thesis work. Up to six credit hours can be from outside the IE program related to the specialty area.
  • To satisfy the core requirement, one course must be taken from each of the three tracks.

For the non-thesis option, additional requirements are:

  • The applied project must involve some aspect of the selected track/specialty area.
  • Requirement for each track consists of four courses (12 credit hours) from that track. The remaining 21 credit hours must support the selected track/specialty area. Up to 12 credit hours can be from outside the IE program related to the concentration area.
  • To satisfy the core requirement, one course must be taken from each of the three tracks.

The program-level academic course plan for each student will be developed in consultation with and approved by the student’s graduate advisory committee. The committee will include the student’s major advisor and at least two additional members of the graduate faculty such that the LSU Graduate School’s requirements for graduate committees are satisfied.

Industrial Engineering students can also earn a Doctor of Philosophy through the Engineering Science program with major concentration in Industrial Engineering or its variants. For the interdepartmental doctoral program in engineering science, a student must complete 54 semester hours of graduate-level courses beyond the bachelor’s, with half of these hours at or above the 7000 level. Two sub-areas of specialization are required, comprising a total of 24 hours, with at least one 7000-level course in each area. Each student must complete and successfully defend a dissertation research topic and general examination. The doctoral program is administered by the Associate Dean for Academic Programs in the College of Engineering.
