Master’s Programs

The School of Music offers the Master of Music (MM), the Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in music. Specializations at the master’s level are: brass performance, choral conducting, collaborative keyboard, composition, jazz studies, music education, music theory, musicology, orchestral conducting, organ performance, percussion performance, piano pedagogy, piano performance, string performance, vocal performance, wind conducting, and woodwind performance.

The Master of Music degree at LSU requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of graduate course work (33 for the master’s in music theory). Up to six hours of graduate credit may be transferred from another institution if such credit satisfies required or elective course work at LSU and is approved by the area faculty. The master’s degree must be completed within five years. The majority of the required course work will be selected from courses at the 7000 level with minimal number of credit hours selected from 4000 level courses that carry graduate credit.

A thesis is required for the master’s degrees in Composition, Music Theory and Musicology and is selected by registering for six credit hours of the thesis course number 8000. The thesis is an option for the master’s degree in Music Education and is selected by registering for six credit hours of the thesis course number 8000.
