The School of Education offers undergraduate and graduate programs in curriculum and instruction and in educational leadership, research, and counseling. P-12 education programs prepare educational professionals to become reflective practitioners, effective professionals, and inquiring pedagogues.
Among graduate programs offered are those in educational leadership and research, school and clinical mental health community counseling, K-12 and higher education administration, educational research methodology, and educational technology. The department has as its mission the preparation of professional educational leaders and scholars knowledgeable in contemporary issues in education, creative in their efforts to address challenges in education and the community, and skilled in addressing the needs of an increasingly diverse clientele in various educational and human service arenas.
Holmes Master’s Programs Leading to Teacher Certification
Elementary Holmes Program
Students who are in the Elementary Education undergraduate program can apply for admission into the Elementary Holmes Program during the fall of the junior year. Students should contact the Office of Student Services for the application process and timeline. Admission into the Elementary Holmes Program will be on a selective basis. Students will be selected from those candidates who meet the following requirements:
- Completion of all undergraduate coursework with a GPA of at least 3.00 and all graduate courses with a GPA of at least 3.00;
- Completion of all undergraduate professional education coursework and other courses as required for certification with no grade lower than a “C”;
- Passing scores on the required PRAXIS Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades K-6 (5622) and the PRAXIS Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001) tests; and
- Admission to the LSU Graduate School
Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the Elementary Holmes Program. The Elementary Holmes Admissions & Review Committee will select from among qualified applicants those students to be admitted into the Elementary Holmes Program.
Secondary Holmes Program
Graduate year, subject-specific cohorts will be formed in the School of Education for graduate study in secondary education programs leading to initial teacher certification. Secondary teaching areas include English, mathematics, social studies, and the sciences (biology, chemistry, physics). Prospective undergraduate students interested in the teacher education program should contact the School of Education, Secondary Holmes coordinator upon admission to the university. Applicants may include candidates with degrees, as well as seniors finishing their programs in the various academic areas.
Admission requirements include:

Completion of all undergraduate and prior graduate coursework with a GPA of at least 3.00;

Passing scores on the PRAXIS Core Academic Skills for Educators (PRAXIS CORE) assessments or minimum ACT composite of 22 or minimum SAT composite of 1100 and on the appropriate PRAXIS II subject area/specialty test(s);

Substantive current coursework in the content area as determined by program faculty;

Completed materials for application to the teacher education program, subject-specific cohorts submitted to the School of Education Office of Graduate Admissions and Assessment on or before March 15; and

Admission to the LSU Graduate School
Meeting minimum requirements, including an undergraduate degree in an appropriate field and admission to the LSU Graduate School, does not guarantee admission to the teacher education program. A School of Education admissions panel will select from among qualified applicants those students to be admitted into the subject-specific cohorts.
